Featured Business Partner: Miss Glynis School of Dance

Miss Glynis School of Dance is located in the Penbrook community in Harrisburg just off Walnut Street, near the Penbrook firehouse and borough building. The studio doesn’t have a lot of storage space, so Miss Glynis has a self storage unit at Harrisburg Self Storage where she stores many things for the studio such as costumes, props and equipment. The studio is locally owned and operated by Glynis Smith, and we are proud to say the school has been our business partner for over three years.

Miss Glynis School of DanceThe studio was previously known as Patsy Morris School of Dance before Miss Glynis took over. Miss Glynis carries on the traditions and love of dance with hundreds of families in our area spanning many generations. She has been teaching dance for more than 35 years and is a member of the Dance Masters of America Association. The other teachers at the studio include Miss Morgan, Miss Heather and Miss Randi, who all have been sharing their love of dance for nearly 20 years and have been dancing at the studio since they were three years of age! Every member of the teaching staff is a state certified Elementary or Secondary teacher as well as first aid and CPR trained, providing added safety benefits for you and your children before, during and after class.

The school offers combination classes that range from three years of age through adults. Class sizes range from 10-15 students per class and are organized by age, skill level and dance experience. That means you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy class here, and it also means you can still learn more if you have a lot of knowledge and experience. Students at the school can participate in tap, ballet and jazz, as well as a variety of other dance related activities.

As each dance season wraps up, all students perform in costume on the stage at the Harrisburg State Forum at their annual dance recital. This typically takes place in early June and is a great time for students to show off everything they have learned and give them the experience of performing in front of a live audience. The show has always been a big hit and it’s free to the public, so I highly recommend that you check it out.

Miss Glynis School of Dance offers classes in the evening Monday through Thursday as well as Saturday morning. Classes are reasonably priced and family discounts are available. Stop in and sign up today – you won’t be sorry! Everyone should experience the joy of dance.

If you also suffer from not having enough storage space at home or at your business and you need a storage unit, you can reserve one or rent a storage unit online now!

Ted Lick Memorial Sporting Clays Classic – A Success!

It was kind of a gloomy looking morning as I set out to attend the Ted Lick Memorial Sporting Clays Classic. This year the event was held on August 22nd at the Blue Ridge Sportsman Club in Linglestown. When I arrived around 8:30am, the rain was just enough to be a little annoying. I noticed that many people scheduled to compete had a look of concern on their faces just hoping that the rain would let up. Nonetheless, everyone was in good spirits as they entered the club house for registration and excited to begin the shoot!

I had the opportunity to speak with many of the attendees and sponsors. As I spoke with participants, I learned that many of them were from out of town. One gentleman and his daughter were from the Pittsburgh area. Some sponsors for the event included Applebee’s, Bass Pro Shops, Ned Smith Center and the NRA. I had the opportunity to speak with a rep from Applebee’s who was nice enough to let me know they had about 57 volunteers present to help with the event, and they have been a sponsor and providing volunteers for the past eight years. This event is held every year to support the Ned Smith Center and their unique educational programming.

A meeting was held in the big tent to go over the event schedule for the day and also to go over the rules for the shoot. I was surprised to see how many of the shooters were using an over-under type of shotgun compared to those using a semi-automatic gun. I also learned that since I was not registered to participate, I was restricted from the shoot areas. This was of course for my safety.

Practice began for the shooters around 10am. Many of the participants took advantage of this time to warm up. Most of the teams warmed up together for the event. Many shooters didn’t know who their teammates would be until the day of the event! So, practice was definitely a good idea for them.

There was also a live auction and a silent auction that was set to take place after the shoot wrapped up. A large variety of rifles and shotguns were on display as well as beautiful prints. There would also be an awards ceremony for several categories after the shoot.

During lunch, I mingled with some of the participants. We enjoyed lunch provided by Applebee’s and talked about self storage! It’s nice to provide information about self storage to people and let them know the advantages to using it. Even though they were from out of town and wouldn’t be able to use my facilities, they seemed interested in what self storage was and how it could possibly help them. I told them all about Harrisburg Self Storage and Sierra’s Glen Self Storage, and what services each facility offers.

After lunch was over, the event was back on and it was time for me to head back to the office. I really had a great time attending this community event and learning about clay shoots in general. If you are interested in clay shooting to participate or even just to be a spectator, I highly recommend you attend the Ted Lick Memorial Sporting Clays Classic next year!

Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania Needs Your Help!

For years, our facility has displayed a collection box year-round where you can donate items like clothes and household goods to Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania (VOAPA). We also reserve a self storage unit to collect larger donations such as furniture and appliances.

VOAPA suffered a great loss on Monday, May 12th when a fire destroyed a warehouse in Harrisburg filled with hundreds of items bound for their thrift stores. They are estimating a loss of $250,000 in retail merchandise. All profits from their thrift stores benefit 28 human service programs right here in Pennsylvania by funding affordable housing for seniors, subsidized housing for adults living with mental illnesses, families who are homeless and others facing personal crisis as well as programs promoting self-sufficiency.

 …………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Volunteers of America of PATheir Mission:
Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania is a faith-based human service nonprofit organization. With compassionate care that touches mind, body, heart and spirit, our highly effective programs help seniors, adults, youth and children reach for their full potential.

Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania is dedicated to supporting and empowering the vulnerable and under-served.  As part of one of the nation’s largest human services organizations serving more than 2 million people every year, we see the potential in everyone and help them accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania envisions caring communities where Pennsylvanians support each other’s mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

VOAPA exists to help others in our community in times of need. We strongly believe in this great non-profit organization with whom we partner.

We are asking for you help during their time of need!

We are actively collecting donations. Please note, we do not have a drop box and all items must be collected inside our rental office. We ask that you bring donations to our facility during normal business hours. All items need to be either new or in working order and in very good physical condition with no stains, breaks or tears present. Free pick up of items can also be requested directly through VOAPA by calling 717-766-2999.
