4 Things to Find After You Move

When you are in the process of moving around, you have a million things running around your brain. It’s only natural that you tend to forget a few things here and there. Most people do not realize that once the move is done, it’s still not really over. Here are 4 things you need to find AFTER you are done moving.

4 Things After You Move

1. Hairdresser

hair, blow dry, women

Many people have one hair dresser that they trust and keep around for a long time. Well when you move, you may not think about this right away, but when times comes for a fresh cut, where do you go? Well you can ask friends, neighbors or even co workers. Another option is to check local hair dressers/barber shops and their online reviews. This should be enough to find someone well recommended. You might have to try a few before you find a favorite.

2. Family Doctor

Family doctors are hard to find and even harder to get into. So this might be an important step before you even move, leaving it until you arrive could be costly. We suggest that you first ask your original family doctor to see if they can refer you to another in your destination city. You could also use this website to help your search, they list all the physicians in your new area.

Interior Units, doors

3. Storage

If you are downsizing or simply need time to unpack and sort everything out, finding storage is critical. Often times you can research self storage facilities in your area, Sparefoot is a great online tool for this. At Stop and Store we have storage locations across the US, check and see if we can help you.

4. Trusted Mechanic

Finding a good mechanic is almost as hard as finding a doctor. You want someone you can trust with your vehicle. If you haven’t found one, your car brand dealership could help, however we suggest going independent as the service and prices are generally better. Just like hairdressers, online reviews are your best friend in this situation.

Don’t forget these 4 things and the sooner you start thinking about them the better. Good luck with your move and choose Stop and Store Harrisburg for all your storage needs.

How to Store Paint and Keep It Fresh

We promise this article is much more exciting then watch paint dry. Actually, if you follow these paint storing tips, your paint won’t dry out. It can be quite a pain to find the exact color you used on your kitchen walls two years later. Keeping paint fresh and accessible is important to ensure you can make proper repairs.

The Best Way to Store Paint

Watercolor

Probably the most common and easy paint to store. This paint can be found in your child’s paint collection. It comes in the form of dense chalky type discs and requires water to become active. These are sold inside containers and should be stored just like that, but away from the sun.

Oil Based

Oil based paints are often used on a pallet. These are common to be used by artists painting on a canvas. If you find yourself needing to store the paint on your pallet, lay a sheet of saran wrap around the wooden pallet. If you are looking for a more permanent storage option, try a sealed container.

Acrylic Based

These paints you find in many arts stores. They are meant to be used for projects on many types of surfaces. They are sold in tubes and should be kept inside their original tubs to preserve them. Just make sure the cap is free of old paint and keep them away from sunlight.

Latex Based

This is your household paint, used on the walls etc. This paint comes in large cans ranging from 1 gallon to 4. The trick to keeping these paints is to make sure the seal between the lip and can is airtight. Place a plastic sheet between the can and lip and hammer it down. When you re open this paint it might need a good stir or a shake to get the color back.

We hope this will help you when you are tying to keep paint. The best place to store paint for the future is in a self storage unit, away from the sun and with climate control.

Not Sure What to Store? Ask These 3 Questions

So, you have decided on a self storage unit. Whether you are looking to de clutter your home, you need to store some things during a selling process, or you are starting a business. Whatever the reason you may be asking your self “What should I store?” Well we have three questions you should ask yourself if you don’t know what to store.

3 Questions to Ask before Storing

If you are still unsure, you can always drop us and email for more tips!

1. Is it Used Often?skis, board, winter

Probably the best way to know to store an item is to figure out if you actually use it often enough. If the answer to this is NO, then clearly it needs to be stored away. This question is also great when looking at seasonal items. If it’s Summer and you ask yourself if you plan to use that ski jacket, the answer will be NO. So gather up all the items that you don’t use and put em into a storage unit.

phones, old, multiple2. Do I have Multiple?

Just get married? Do you have 3 toasters sitting around? Then your best bet is to get those items in storage. This isn’t restricted to the newlyweds. If you have multiple items or multiple different items that all do the same thing, then its time to store them away. A big process of de cluttering a space is streamlining it, which is accomplished by removing redundant items.

3. Do I Have Space For This?clothes, closet, room

If you are really unsure about an item, just figure out if you have space for it. This is a great way to stop impulse buying as well, if you don’t have room don’t buy it. If you got home and realize this, it’s off to the storage unit. This works well for big and bulky items that don’t have proper place to fit.

Think you have a better way to deciding what to store? We would love to hear it!

How To Rent Out A Small Space

With the meteoric rise of websites like Air BnB, it’s no surprise that many people are trying to hop on this gold rush.  Anyone can make an account, set up some basic information and begin renting something as small as a single room.  However, there are a few things that you need to do before you just rent out a room or smaller space. Let Stop and Store Harrisburg show you how to rent out a small space.

How To Rent A Small Space

These general rules also apply to larger spaces, even entire homes. The process might be longer, but it’s the same idea.

Appearance Is Everythingcamera, appearance, rent

Sure, you could just take any old photos and throw them up on a rental site, but your chances of renting seriously decline. The price you demand is also going to take a hit, as no one will pay top dollar for a place that seems unkempt or from an owner that couldn’t be bother to take some nice photos. So get to it, clean and
scrub that place until its perfect. If you don’t have a good camera, hit Craigslist and hire a photographer, they don’t have to be expensive.

Fix The Brokenbroken, door, rent, fix

Grab your tool box and fix everything that’s broken or may need repair in the near future. It takes only a few bad reviews to make sure no one else rents your place out again. If you can’t fix it on your own, hire a handyman and put him to work asap. Think of these expenses as an investment. The better your space is, the more will rent and the more money you will make.

Choose Your Market

It’s your space after all so now you need to decide what types of people that you want to rent to. The good thing party, rent, storage, poolbehind rental sites like Air BnB is that you, the owner, has the power to accept of decline renters. When someone requests a booking, you see their history, age and a photo. You can even request to speak with them before hand. If you live in a party area of town, and a group of 21 year old’s request to book, you can expect some partying, so decide before hand whether you want to cater to this market.

Renting a smaller space out isn’t hard, its easier than a big one and its a great way to make some extra cash. If you have the space, why not?

If you decide to rent out a space, you can store some of the more valuable items with us at our secure self storage facility.

Document Storage MUST DO’s

Self storage is a great options for those that need to store documents. Many businesses need to keep important documents for many years, as much as 10 years in some cases. This however, starts to take up a lot of space in the long run. They also can become unorganized and lost if they are moved around too much to make space. If for some reason you are called upon to produce these documents, its very important you can access them quickly.

Document Storage

Proper Document Protection

Paper is fragile, and its susceptible to a lot of elements like moisture and heat. So having a proper way to store them away from these elements is important. Make sure you choose plastic and opaque containers. Many places such as Walmart carry stack-able plastic containers made for documents and papers. These light weight containers are easy to move and will last a long long time.

Proper Organization

Throwing all the papers together is a bad idea. As a business you have different papers from different aspects of your business. So make sure that you label each container and mark the year down. Organize them documents in a way that once they no longer need to be kept they can be easily taken out and destroyed.

Keep Them Close

There is a good chance you will be called upon to access some documents often. So its important that they are close at hand and easily accessible. At Stop and Store Harrisburg, we make sure that we have flexible hours to access them anytime. We are also conveniently located right in Harrisburg so you don’t have to travel far.

4 Ways to Get The Most From a Road Trip

Everyone loves road trips right? Crammed into a small car for hours on end without any leg room, sounds lovely. If you are one of those people that despises road trips let us give you a few tips to make them more enjoyable.

4 Road Trip Must Do’s

Rough Plans

Do not be hard headed and stick to a rigid plan. Road trips should have some spontaneity. Make sure that all you have is an end place and a rough time. Make stops along the way at places you deem cool, its a great way to break the monotony of the trip and see news things.

Car Prep

The worst thing you want to have happen to you is a breakdown. When you are far from home this is a very expensive hurdle to overcome. Worst case, your car needs to be towed to a shop, the parts aren’t available and you have to spend the night in a dingy motel. Not fun, so make sure you prep your car properly.

  • Oil Change
  • Spare Tire
  • Small Road Side Toolkit
  • Jug of Water
  • Tires filled and double checked

Pack Right

There is not a lot of space to being with, so do not plan on bringing everything. Pack much less then you need and make sure to have two bags. A bigger one for the trunk with things you will not need until the destination, and a smaller one you can have in the car with you. This small pack can contain some snacks, pillows, blankets etc. Keep it light.

Entertainment

Especially if you have kids, good and long entertainment is a must. Tablets work great for this as you can watch movies and TV shows. Did you know Netflix now lets you download Movies and TV Shows for later watching? This is a life saver to many. Bringing a pack of cards for your riders helps too when the batteries die.

We hope wherever you road trip to that you get there safe and do not lose your mind completely.
